Old Sturbridge Village, Sturbridge, Massachusetts

Old Sturbridge Village is "an educational amusement" easily reached by the Massachusetts Turnpike (I 90), Routes 395, 495 and 84, as well as many state roads.

I have visited the village at least six times since I was a child. I believe the first time was a junior high field trip. Later visits were with family and friends.

Each time I go, I marvel at the way in which you are transported back to the early 1980's. You can spend as much time as your want wandering through the exhibits. I learn so much more on each return visit.

I even love the drive up there from Connecticut. I usually take Rte 169 to Southbridge and then follow the signs on Rte 131 to Sturbridge.

Depending on the time of day I can recommend Roms Restaurant, which features a full Italian menu, including an all you can eat buffet.

If you are looking for something with a more historic atmosphere, there is the Publick House. Both restaurants are located on Rte. 131.

A day spent visiting the Old Sturbridge Village in Sturbridge, Massachusetts is a day imaging yourself back in 19th century New England. Even before you enter this living, breathing museum, you can catch glimpses of employees in their period costumes, coming or going in the parking lot area.

Your can begin and or end your tour in the Visitor's Center. This large white, colonial building houses a snack shop, a wonderful gift shop and a book store.

From their you can wander through the herb gardens before you enter the world of a 19th century village. Once in the village you will be able to see crafts, demonstrations, and speak to the village inhabitants. You can ask questions of the blacksmith, the potter, the cooper, the tin smith and many, many more. There are stores to visit, the Freeman Farm to wander through and houses of worship.

If you are interested in school tours, their Boy Scout activities or their annual Calendar of Events, I suggest you visit their www.osv.org website. It is very easy to navigate and very helpful.

If you have time, Sturbridge and neighboring town, Brimfield offer many antique shops.
