Gavins Point Recreation Area
Yankton, South Dakota
On Hwy 52, in Yankton, SD, we found the Gavins Point Recreation Area on
the Lewis and Clark Lake. The lake is part of the Missouri River bordering
southern South Dakota and northern Nebraska. The two states are divided
here by the Gavin's Point Dam. We found that we could drive across the dam,
passing from one state, into the other. The views the dam offer are breathtaking.
We were very impressed with everything we saw. This recreation area is part of the nation's Wild and Scenic River system.
The
outdoor opportunities there include camping , fishing, hunting, swimming,
bird watching and photography.
We also visited areas set aside for archery and a camp site where you can bring in your horses and ride along the trails. This horse camp comes complete with shaded corrals.
Gavins Point is home to the Chalk Bluffs Multi Use Trail where we found 4.1 miles of trails for horseback riding, hikers and mountain bike riders.
The nature trail is a 1.2 mile of natural surface hiking trail winding to the top of Gavins Point. At the end of the trail we found a scenic overlook of the lake and a beautiful gazebo to relax in.
There are a number of boat launches, in the Gavins Point Recreation area that will accommodate those who have fishing boats, power boats, sailboats, kayaks and canoes.
There
are also several beautiful shaded beaches for the whole family to enjoy
a day by the water.
The beaches also offer playgrounds.
Camping opportunities include areas for motor homes, campers and tents.
There are also cabins available right on the water.
We
visited with park personnel and learned that each campground, run by the
South Dakota State Park system, requires you to call 1-800-710-2267 to make
your reservations.
She advised that you call at least 90 days in advance. All campgrounds also set aside one section for sites to be rented on a first come/first serve basis.
The
State Parks Reservation has a website at www.CampSD.com
