Ekonk Hill Turkey Farm and Brown Cow Cafe, Sterling, CT
Ekonk
Hill Turkey Farm and the Brown
Cow Cafe is a delightful treasure in Eastern, CT. I love to bring any
visitors I might have there so that they can enjoy all the turkey farm has
to offer.
The Hermonot family began, a few years ago, by raising free range turkeys and selling them for Thanksgiving.
Today what they have is a growing business that is already becoming a tourist destination.
When you drive along Rt 49 (directions below) you see signs that direct you into their yard. The farm store houses some real surprises.
Before you even get into the door, you are greeted with a large variety of seasonal flowers that are for sale.
When
I was there this weekend, there were the largest, most beautiful hanging
pots of mums in a variety of colors. There was also a large selection of
pumpkins.
Once you make it in the door you will find the Brown Cow Cafe, the offerings include a light luncheon of hot dogs and homemade soups. They also have farm fresh ice cream for sale in cones or cups.
Sundaes, milk shakes, banana splits, pie a la mode, Hosmer Mountain soda and hot coffee are also available. If your lucky and it's the right season you will be able to get sweet apple cider.
Mrs.
Hermonot bakes homemade pies, cookies, donuts, muffins and tea breads. There
is also a selection of european style breads.
The pies can be purchased by the slice, fresh from the oven or frozen, for you take home and enjoy. Don't forget to look for my favorite, turkey pot pies.
Ekonk Hill Turkey Farm is dedicated to carrying only Connecticut Grown products. There are seasonal vegetables and fruits always available.
After
ordering your ice cream you can sit in the indoor seating area or browse
the shelves for locally made handicrafts and artwork. The farm store also
carries Farmstead cheeses, raw milk, farm fresh yogury, grass fed beef,
local pork, preserves, relishes, maple syrup, honey and CT roasted coffee.
Once you are outside again, you can visit a few of the turkeys, or relax on the outside picnic tables.
