Dorena Missouri - Hickman Kentucky Ferry
Rich
and I were traveling north east through Missouri in Routes 80, 102 and 77
when we spotted
the sign for this toll ferry. We both love anything the least bit different
so we decided that was
going to be our next adventure.
The Dorena, Missouri - Hickman, Kentucky Toll Ferry is one of the
few remaining riverboat ferries in the United States.
The only operating ferry crossing the Mississippi River between Missouri
and Kentucky.
They
have both a summer and winter schedule. I will post it here
for your convenience;
Summer Schedule Central Daylight Savings
Time Winter Schedule Central Standard Time Departs Kentucky
First at 7:00 AM Last at 6:15 PM Departs Kentucky
First at 7:00 AM Last at 5:15 PM Departs Missouri
First at 7:30 AM Last at 6:30 PM Departs Missouri
First at 7:30 AM Last at 5:30 PM
Their
basic car fee is $10.00, but because we were in the motorhome, we paid $20.00.
We didn't think that was too steep. Now I can say I crossed the Mississippi
River on a ferry boat.
The crew were very friendy and the views were pretty, considering it was
a rainy November day.
Operated by the Mississippi County Port Authority, the Dorena-Hickman Ferry
service makes twelve round-trips each week day and sixteen round-trips on
weekends.
In a typical year , the ferry can carry nearly 11,000 vehicles, over 25,000
passengers and 350
bicycles across the Mississippi River
